Pressure ulcers are one of the most common problems for people who have to remain immobilized for long periods of time. First, there is a reddening of the skin in the pressure area that leads to complete destruction of the skin and deep wounds with a fairly long healing process. They occur mainly in the areas of the body that are in contact with the support surface, for example, the wheelchair or the chair in which they usually sit, because the blood does not flow sufficiently and the cells in the area do not receive the necessary oxygen; humidity is another determining factor in their appearance, taking into account that many of these people also suffer from incontinence and that sweat accumulates.

The Norton scale, developed by Doreen Norton in 1962, measures the risk of pressure ulcers; it evaluates five sections with a scale from 1 to 4; the sum of the total indicates the risk, the lower the total value, the greater the risk of pressure ulcers.

What can we do to prevent pressure ulcers? It is necessary to avoid humidity with frequent changes of diaper and frequent changes of posture (every 3 hours is the recommended period) and to use anti-scarring cushions with a horseshoe shape that release the pressure from the support surface.

At Ubiotex we have a wide variety of horseshoe cushions, which one to choose depends on many factors such as the patient’s general condition, the risk of pressure ulcers, the weight and the taste of the user. These cushions release pressure from the contact area by distributing it evenly throughout the cushion, regulate temperature and prevent excessive sweating, but it is very important to place them in the right way so that they are totally effective: the purpose is to leave the coccyx area in suspension to release pressure.

They have a nucleus formed by a layer of injected viscoelastic and a layer of silicone gel in the upper area that helps to distribute the pressure evenly.
